About Caryn

Caryn Heilman began studying Continuum Movement in 1994, midway through her professional modern dance career with the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

She founded LiquidBody in 2001 so that she could share this somatic movement inquiry through classes and workshops and pursue the somatic fluid dance thread she was following in the visionary work of Continuum’s founder Emilie Conrad that fulfilled fundamentals begun in the work of Modern Dance’s mothers, Martha Graham (the contraction/release as a stylized wave and the spiral) and Isadora Duncan (who came to see everything as a wave).

Caryn is an Authorized Continuum Movement teacher with an MFA in Dance from the University of California, Irvine and has taught master classes at Princeton, Hollins, Texas Christian and Dennison Universities, Smith College, Beijing Dance Academy, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Orange County and LaGuardia High Schools of the Arts and more.

She has taught with and been mentored by Emilie Conrad, Yvonne Rainer, Annie Loui, John Crawford and Paul Taylor. Annually, she continues to teach classes she taught with Emilie Conrad at SOMAFest L.A., now in its tenth year.

She is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator (RSME) with the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA) and serves on the Board. She is on the Advisory Board of SOMAFest and has also served on the Advisory Board of the Dance Notation Bureau.
